New Jersey surpasses 250,000 electric vehicle registrations during Climate Week
TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey has reached a major clean transportation milestone, with more than 250,000 electric vehicles (EVs) now registered in the state, Gov. Phil Murphy announced Tuesday.
According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, more than 254,444 EVs are currently registered — a 15% increase since December 2024 and a sharp rise compared to just three years ago. Officials said the growth reflects both consumer confidence in EV reliability and the state’s expanding charging infrastructure.
“Over the course of my Administration, our policies have taken driving electric from a futuristic concept to a practical choice for drivers – reflected by the exponential growth in registrations,” Murphy said. “By continuing to expand charging infrastructure and cater to consumer preferences by incentivizing electric vehicle purchases, we will reduce the impact of cumulative transportation emissions on our climate for future generations. We will also grow a healthy market that increases consumer choice for cleaner and more affordable vehicles and creates good-paying jobs.”
The Murphy administration has implemented a range of policies to support EV adoption, including incentives for vehicle purchases and charging infrastructure. State officials said New Jersey now has more than 1,700 fast charging ports and 3,300 Level 2 charging ports available to the public, with several hundred more being added each year.
