Newton Police Chief Joseph D’Annibale retires after two decades of service
NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Newton Police Chief Joseph D’Annibale retired Wednesday afternoon, concluding more than 20 years of service with the department.
D’Annibale, a lifelong Newton resident and graduate of Newton High School, began his law enforcement career in 2004 after graduating from the Morris County Police Academy. He joined the Newton Police Department in 2006 and served in a variety of roles throughout his career.
He worked as a patrol officer, detective, evidence custodian, school liaison, firearms instructor, patrol sergeant and lieutenant of the Support Services Division. He was assigned to the Detective Bureau in 2011 and was promoted to sergeant in 2020, lieutenant in 2022, acting chief in 2024 and chief of police in 2025.
During his tenure, D’Annibale received several commendations, including a Congressional Certificate of Recognition as a Hometown Hero and a Lifesaving Award from Newton Medical Center.
Officials said he led the department with a focus on training, officer wellness and community partnerships.
His retirement was effective at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
In a message marking his departure, D’Annibale thanked colleagues and community members for their support.
“To every police officer, dispatcher, secretary, town official, and community partner, thank you for standing beside me throughout my career. I could not have done this job without your professionalism, dedication, and support. Serving with you has been the greatest honor of my life, and I will forever be proud to have worn this badge alongside such an exceptional team.”
Officials described his career as one defined by service, leadership and dedication to the Newton community.
