NJ labor department, attorney general partner with GameStop to promote awareness of earned sick leave law
TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development and the state Office of the Attorney General announced Tuesday an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance with video game retailer GameStop, Inc., aimed at boosting awareness of New Jersey’s Earned Sick Leave Law among the company’s employees.
The agreement underscores GameStop’s commitment to complying with state labor laws while improving employees’ knowledge of their right to paid sick time to care for themselves or family members.
“We are excited to join the Office of the Attorney General and GameStop as partners in this voluntary agreement that will help to raise awareness of New Jersey’s earned sick leave benefits for GameStop employees across the Garden State,” said Labor Commissioner Robert Asaro-Angelo. “This private-public partnership empowers GameStop team members and strengthens New Jersey families by educating workers on the earned sick leave they are entitled to when they need it the most.”
“Retail workers should not have to choose between their health and their jobs,” said Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin. “Under New Jersey’s Earned Sick Leave Law, workers don’t have to endure a waiting period before earning sick leave time. And they don’t have to carry the burden of finding a replacement for when they are out sick. I’m glad that GameStop is taking additional steps to ensure full compliance with the law.”
As part of the agreement, NJDOL and GameStop will implement a statewide communication plan to promote employee awareness of earned sick leave rights. Measures include posting visible notices in every New Jersey store, providing digital notifications on the company’s intranet, and requiring all store and district managers to undergo training on implementing the law effectively.
Officials said the collaboration serves as a model for private-public partnerships that reinforce worker protections while fostering a fairer and more balanced workforce.
