NJ State Police join nationwide Operation Dry Water to target boating under the influence
NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey State Police will participate in Operation Dry Water from July 4–6, a nationwide campaign aimed at preventing boating under the influence (BUI) and raising public awareness about the dangers of impaired boating.
Operation Dry Water is a year-round initiative that emphasizes the heightened risks associated with operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Officials warn that alcohol’s effects are intensified on the water due to environmental factors such as sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion—all of which can impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time.
In 2024, alcohol was the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents nationwide, accounting for 20% of all boating-related deaths.
“Boating and alcohol don’t mix,” the State Police said in a statement. “Boating under the influence is not only dangerous—it’s a serious crime.”
New Jersey troopers will be conducting enhanced patrols during the holiday weekend to ensure compliance and keep the state’s waterways safe. The State Police are responsible for monitoring more than 150,000 registered vessels throughout New Jersey.
Officials urge boaters to make responsible choices, avoid impaired operation, and prioritize safety.
“Don’t let a good time turn into a bad memory. Stay safe and boat sober,” the agency said.
