NJ State Police remind boaters that cold-weather life jacket rule now in effect

NEW JERSEY — The New Jersey State Police are reminding boaters that, effective November 1, state regulations now require everyone aboard a recreational vessel under 26 feet — including rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards — to wear a securely fastened U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket while the vessel is underway.

Under N.J.A.C. Regulation 13:82-1.4(f), the rule will remain in effect through May 1 and applies to all passengers on deck or in open areas. Individuals inside a cabin are exempt.

The law is designed to prevent hypothermia-related deaths and reduce risks for first responders during winter search and rescue operations. According to State Police, in nearly every vessel-related drowning, the victim was not wearing a life jacket.

Boaters are urged to prepare for cold-water conditions and ensure that all personal flotation devices (PFDs) are properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved, and securely fastened before heading out on the water.
