Officials aware of odor coming from water treatment plant in Mount Olive Township

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, NJ (Morris County) – Officials are aware of an odor coming from the Mount Olive Villages Water Company treatment plant, which is not owned or operated by the township, that has been affecting the quality of life in the community.

“We have been actively communicating with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJ DEP) and the treatment plant operator regarding these issues, including the recent failures and ongoing repair plans, the township said.

“We have been informed that while there have been delays in receiving necessary parts, repair work has already commenced and is expected to be completed by the end of next week,” the township said.

If you continue to experience nuisance odors, the township encourages you to report them by calling the NJ DEP’s 24-hour environmental hotline at 1-877-WARN-DEP (1-877-927-6337).

“The aeration system at the Mount Olive Wastewater Treatment Plant, began having issues (based on the timing of the complaints from the public) in the June/July time frame, causing sewage odors in the area of the plant. The DEP has confirmed that the facility operator last week finished replacing piping and diffusers to correct the situation,” a spokesperson for the NJDEP told RNJ. “The plant operator, however, has indicated that odors may continue as levels of bacteria needed for the treatment process are adjusted. Related to this incident, the DEP has issued the enforcement order pertaining to odors caused by the aeration system failure.”
