Project Self-Sufficiency seeks donations to provide Thanksgiving meals for hundreds of local families

NEWTON, N.J. (Sussex County) — Project Self-Sufficiency is calling on area residents and organizations to help provide Thanksgiving meals for hundreds of local families in need this holiday season.

The Newton-based nonprofit is preparing to distribute complete Thanksgiving dinners to about 500 families and is requesting donations of traditional holiday food items or financial contributions to help purchase supplies. Donors are invited to sponsor a family for $50 or contribute any amount of their choosing.

“Requests for assistance are pouring in every day, and we expect to serve more than 500 families this year,” said Deborah Berry-Toon, Executive Director of Project Self-Sufficiency. “However, our wonderfully generous community has consistently demonstrated compassion towards our participants during the holidays, and we are confident that this year will be no exception.”

The organization is accepting donations of pumpkin or apple pies; canned vegetables, including yams and cranberry sauce; dinner rolls; gravy; stuffing; and mashed potato mixes. Donors are asked to deliver items or notify the agency of their intent to contribute by Friday, Nov. 14, to allow time to package and distribute the meals.

Frozen turkeys will be accepted Wednesday, Nov. 19, and Thursday, Nov. 20, but donors must contact the agency in advance to arrange drop-off due to limited refrigerated storage.

Individuals and families seeking assistance for Thanksgiving are encouraged to call Project Self-Sufficiency at 973-940-3500. Donations can be dropped off at the organization’s headquarters at 127 Mill Street in Newton.
