Rabid raccoon found in Somerset County after exposure to dogs, health officials say

FAR HILLS BOROUGH, N.J. (Somerset County) — Health officials are warning residents after a raccoon found in Far Hills tested positive for rabies.

According to the Somerset County Department of Health, a resident’s dogs were exposed to a rabid raccoon and killed it in a backyard on June 15 in the area of Spring Hollow Road.

The raccoon was collected by Animal Control Solutions and submitted to the New Jersey Department of Health Public Health Laboratory, where testing confirmed rabies.

Officials said the dogs were current on their rabies vaccinations and have been placed under quarantine as required by law.

“While rabies is a serious illness, it is entirely preventable with prompt treatment,” said Somerset County Health Officer Himanshi Bhatt. “We encourage all residents to vaccinate their pets and avoid contact with wild or stray animals, especially those that appear sick or are acting unusually.”

Health officials urged residents to avoid animals acting strangely and to immediately contact their local police department or health department if they encounter one.

Rabies can be transmitted through animal bites or when saliva from an infected animal enters the body through cuts or scratches. Anyone bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal should immediately wash the affected area with soap and water and seek medical attention, officials said.

Pet owners whose animals are bitten or scratched should promptly contact a veterinarian and report the incident to local police and health officials.

According to the New Jersey Department of Health, 20 raccoons tested positive for rabies statewide between January and March of this year.

Officials are encouraging pet owners to keep rabies vaccinations up to date and to take precautions when encountering wildlife.
