Raccoon tests positive for rabies in Hunterdon County

RARITAN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A raccoon in Raritan Township has tested positive for rabies, prompting a public health advisory for residents in the area.

The animal was confirmed rabid on April 8 and was located near Allens Corner Road, according to local health officials.

Residents who may have had contact with the raccoon between March 20 and April 3 are advised to seek medical guidance.

Health officials said anyone potentially exposed should contact their primary care physician or visit the Hunterdon Medical Center emergency room to discuss possible exposure and whether post-exposure treatment is needed.

Rabies is typically transmitted through saliva from infected animals, and officials warned residents not to handle stray or wild animals.

Pet owners are also reminded to ensure their animals are up to date on rabies vaccinations through a veterinarian or local clinics.

Additional information on free rabies vaccination clinics is available through the Hunterdon County Department of Health website.
