Residential electric customers to receive $100 bill credit in New Jersey starting in September

TRENTON, N.J. — The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU) has approved the Residential Universal Bill Credit, providing $100 in direct energy bill assistance to the state’s 3.9 million residential ratepayers with active electric accounts through one of four public, investor-owned utilities: Public Service Electric and Gas, Atlantic City Electric, Jersey Central Power & Light, and Rockland Electric Company.

The credits will be applied in two installments — $50 each in September and October — to help offset increased electricity costs from the PJM capacity market.

“Providing economic relief to our residents is critical in managing rising electric costs from the PJM cost crisis,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “My administration is furthering our commitment to affordability for our residential ratepayers by providing direct assistance to lower the monthly cost of energy bills. No New Jerseyan should fear losing electricity, and we will continue to work with BPU to ensure necessary action is taken to combat untenable energy bills for families and businesses.”

NJBPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy called the bill credit “a key tool” in helping residents this summer. “This is one of many ways that NJBPU is putting affordability first,” she said. “Over $430 million in direct assistance to nearly every residential ratepayer is a key tool to help ratepayers in the short term, while we work to bring more electricity online which will lower costs for all ratepayers.”

The $100 bill credit is part of a larger $430 million relief package to ease the impact of capacity cost increases during peak summer demand. Another portion of the package, the Residential Energy Assistance Program (REAP), will give eligible low-income customers an additional $175 in credits spread between August and February 2026.

Officials encourage residents to explore additional energy assistance programs, including the Universal Service Fund, Fresh Start Program, Payment Assistance for Gas and Electric (PAGE) Program, Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, Lifeline, NJ Shares, NJ Comfort Partners, and the Winter Termination Program. More information on these resources is available at the NJBPU’s website.
