Roadway gives way beneath dump truck at Phillipsburg sinkhole site

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — A roadway collapsed beneath a dump truck Tuesday afternoon at an intersection already closed because of sinkhole concerns, prompting officials to consider evacuating nearby homes.

Phillipsburg police said patrol units were dispatched at approximately 12:58 p.m. to the intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street for a report of a roadway collapse under a dump truck.

The intersection had previously been closed to traffic due to identified sinkholes. The dump truck was operating within the closure as part of an authorized repair crew when the collapse occurred, police said.

The driver sustained minor injuries and was evaluated and treated at the scene by medical personnel.

Officials said the sinkhole appeared larger than originally assessed, and a precautionary evacuation plan for residences in the immediate area is being considered with assistance from the American Red Cross.

Several agencies responded to assist, including Washington Collision Center, JCP&L, Aqua New Jersey, Elizabethtown Gas, the Phillipsburg Emergency Squad and the Phillipsburg Department of Public Works.

The intersection of Summit Avenue and Lewis Street will remain closed until authorities determine the area is safe. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
