Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike closed during daytime hours

The Route 23 southbound ramp to Hamburg Turnpike will be closed during daytime hours Thursday, Friday and Monday as bridge replacement work continues in West Milford, Passaic County, and Kinnelon, Morris County, transportation officials said.

The ramp to Hamburg Turnpike/County Route 694 is scheduled to be closed from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26; Friday, Feb. 27; and Monday, March 2. The closures are necessary as demolition of the existing Route 23 bridge over the Pequannock River and Hamburg Turnpike nears completion.

Route 23 mainline traffic will not be affected, officials said.

During the closures, motorists traveling south on Route 23 who wish to access Hamburg Turnpike, High Crest Road or Bloomingdale will be directed to continue south and take the ramp to Kinnelon/Butler. Drivers will then turn left onto Kinnelon Road (County Route 618), which becomes Kiel Avenue, turn left onto Park Place and then turn right onto Main Street, which becomes Hamburg Turnpike (CR 694).

The work is part of the $78.2 million federally funded Route 23 bridge replacement project between mileposts 16.6 and 17.2 along the border of West Milford in Passaic County and Butler and Kinnelon in Morris County. The project includes replacing the bridge over the Pequannock River, Hamburg Turnpike and nearby railroad tracks, as well as making drainage and utility improvements.

The project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed in fall 2028.

Officials advised motorists to slow down, use caution and expect minor delays in the work zone. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Real-time traffic updates are available at 511nj.org.
