Route 31 southbound reconstruction requires closure of Finnagel’s and McDonald’s driveways next week in Clinton

Access to both restaurants maintained through other entrances

CLINTON, NJ (Hunterdon County) — Route 31 southbound roadway reconstruction will require the closure of the driveways from Route 31 to Finnagel’s Restaurant and McDonald’s next week, as the Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project advances in Clinton. Both restaurants will remain open during construction.

Beginning at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, April 14, until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, the Route 31 southbound driveways to Finnagel’s and McDonald’s are scheduled to be closed for concrete curb work and roadway reconstruction. Access to Finnagel’s will be maintained from Grayrock Road, and access to McDonald’s will be maintained from Center Street.

In addition, the Route 31 southbound ramp to Old Route 22/Route 173/Annandale reopened last week following the completion of concrete removal and reconstruction of the right lane on Route 31 southbound. The ramp had been closed since March 21 for construction.

The $24.8 million federally funded Route 31 pavement reconstruction project will replace deteriorated concrete pavement with full-depth asphalt reconstruction in Clinton. The project will also realign the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance. The acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound will be extended to provide more space for vehicles to merge. Additional work includes drainage improvements, guiderail replacement, lighting and overhead sign installation, and concrete deck repairs on bridges. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website, www.511nj.org, for construction updates and real-time travel information.
