Sherrill and Caldwell clinch New Jersey governor’s race, marking historic win for Democrats
NEW JERSEY — Democrat Mikie Sherrill secured election as New Jersey’s next governor, alongside her running mate Dale Caldwell, in a major victory over Republican opponent Jack Ciattarelli on Nov. 4.
Sherrill, a U.S. congresswoman and former Navy helicopter pilot, brought her campaign to the top of the ticket after selecting Caldwell, president of Centenary University, as her lieutenant-governor candidate earlier in the year. The pair ran on a platform addressing affordability, education and inclusive leadership.
In a message posted on social media following her victory, Sherrill wrote, “New Jersey, it is the honor of my life to earn your trust to become this great state’s 57th Governor. I promise to listen, lead with courage, and never forget who I serve.”
Official results show Sherrill received approximately 56.2 % of the vote to Ciattarelli’s 43.2 %, according to the latest tally.
“This was a tough fight, and this is a tough state, but I know you New Jersey, and I love you,” Sherrill said following the victory.
With this win, Sherrill becomes governor-elect and Caldwell lieutenant governor-elect. They are set to be inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2026, taking over from outgoing Governor Phil Murphy.
The campaign’s success marks a continuation of Democratic wins in New Jersey gubernatorial races, and analysts say the outcome reflects voter concerns over high taxes, rising costs and shifting demographics.
