Somerset County man charged after foot chase; loaded handgun recovered

RARITAN BOROUGH, N.J. (Somerset County) — A Raritan man was arrested Tuesday after a brief foot pursuit and charged in connection with a weapons offense, police said.

Kesanni McCreary, 22, was taken into custody March 17 following an incident that began around 1:53 p.m. on Anderson Street near Sherman Avenue, according to Raritan Borough Police Chief Thomas Fisher.

Police said an officer initially observed McCreary failing to use a crosswalk and attempted to stop him. When the officer approached, McCreary fled on foot, running along Fifth Street toward North Second Avenue.

Officers pursued and apprehended McCreary in a park area between North Second Avenue and First Avenue.

Witnesses told police they saw McCreary discarding items while running. Officers, assisted by a Somerset County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, searched the area and recovered a loaded Ruger handgun with a large-capacity magazine, as well as an additional large-capacity magazine.

McCreary was charged with second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, two counts of fourth-degree possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine and fourth-degree obstruction of law.

He was lodged in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing in Superior Court.
