South Main Street bridge remains closed in Phillipsburg
PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — A key section of South Main Street remained closed Friday as officials continued emergency work on a more than century-old bridge, authorities said.
The roadway was initially shut down around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday between Hudson Street and Hanover Street to allow emergency repairs to a bridge spanning a Norfolk Southern Railroad spur. The closure extended into Thursday, impacting both vehicles and pedestrians.
Town officials said the New Jersey Department of Transportation is working closely with local and county partners following the shutdown, with public safety as the top priority. NJDOT Commissioner Priya Jain conducted an on-site inspection Friday alongside engineers and local officials.
Crews and contractors have mobilized, and pedestrian access was safely restored Thursday evening. However, the bridge remains closed to vehicle traffic as a detailed structural analysis continues.
Officials said the more than 100-year-old structure is being evaluated as NJDOT advances an accelerated plan for both short-term repairs and long-term solutions aimed at restoring full access as quickly and safely as possible.
Phillipsburg police and fire departments continue coordinating with NJDOT to manage detours and maintain traffic flow through the area.
NJ Transit bus routes 890 and 891 remain on detour, and motorists are advised to follow posted routes and expect delays.
Officials said a nearby truss bridge over NJ Transit tracks is not affected by the emergency work.
Local leaders said they remain in communication with state officials to ensure necessary support for the project, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
