South Main Street in Phillipsburg remains closed for emergency bridge repairs

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (Warren County) — A section of South Main Street in Phillipsburg remains closed Thursday morning following an overnight shutdown for emergency bridge repairs, state officials said.

The road was closed around 7:35 p.m. Wednesday between Hudson Street and Hanover Street to allow repairs to a bridge over a Norfolk Southern Railroad spur.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation said the closure affects both vehicles and pedestrians and will remain in place until further notice. The extent of the repairs and the timeline for reopening are still being determined.

Officials noted that a nearby truss bridge over NJ Transit tracks is not part of the emergency work.

NJ Transit bus routes 890 and 891 are also being detoured during the closure.

Detours have been established in both directions. Northbound traffic is being redirected via Mercer Street, Center Street and Warren Street, while southbound traffic is being routed through Hudson Street, Filmore Street and connecting local roads.

State officials said safety is the top priority as crews assess and complete the repairs.

Motorists are advised to use caution, follow posted detours and expect delays. Real-time traffic updates are available at 511nj.org.
