Sparta officer rescues dog after it falls through ice on Lake Mohawk

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Sparta police officer rescued a dog that fell through ice on Lake Mohawk, demonstrating quick action and specialized training during an incident near Rainbow Trail, authorities said.

Police said Patrolman Michael Poon, who is certified in ice rescue, recently responded to a report of a dog in distress on the frozen lake. Using department-issued ice rescue equipment, Poon crawled onto the ice and entered the frigid water to reach the animal.

Officials said Poon was able to push the dog back onto the ice and guide it safely to dry land. The dog was not reported to be injured.

Police also credited nearby residents who promptly contacted authorities after noticing the dog in trouble, noting that their quick action helped lead to a successful rescue.

The department used the incident to remind the public that ice conditions can change rapidly and are often unpredictable. Police urge residents to use caution around frozen bodies of water, noting that ice conditions can change rapidly and are often unpredictable.
