Suspects flee police after suspicious activity in Mountain Lakes
MOUNTAIN LAKES BOROUGH, N.J. (Morris County) — Police are investigating after a black BMW sedan with Pennsylvania license plates was seen driving suspiciously through Mountain Lakes and later linked to an attempted residential burglary in Bergen County, authorities said.
According to police, the incident began May 4 at approximately 2 a.m. when Patrolman Borst, who was heading home after his patrol shift, saw the BMW run a stop sign while exiting Tower Hill Road onto Boulevard.
Police said the vehicle then traveled slowly along Boulevard, stopping sporadically in front of several homes.
Borst relayed the information to on-duty Patrolman Pierre, who later located the BMW on Lake Drive. After Pierre positioned his patrol vehicle behind the sedan, the driver accelerated away at a high rate of speed, police said.
Pierre attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to pull over and fled the area. A pursuit continued onto Route 287 South, where Pierre eventually lost sight of the vehicle, police said.
Later that day, a resident went to police headquarters and provided video footage of a suspicious incident involving the same BMW. Police said the footage showed the vehicle stopping in front of a home in the hill section of the borough. One occupant got out, entered the driveway and began looking into parked vehicles before being startled by the resident’s Ring camera notification and fleeing.
Investigators later determined the same vehicle and suspects were involved in an attempted residential burglary in Bergen County the previous day. In that incident, the suspects reportedly used a crowbar to force open rear windows of a residence, police said.
The investigation remains ongoing.
