Sussex County launches student essay contest ahead of veterans parade

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — Sussex County will hold its annual Salute to Military Veterans parade on Nov. 2 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, officials announced.

The event, organized by the Board of County Commissioners, Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Senior Services, and the Sussex County Veterans Committee, honors the service and sacrifices of local veterans each year.

As part of the program, a patriotic essay contest is open to county students in grades 6 through 8, including those who are homeschooled. The topic is “Why Are We Saluting Sussex County Military Veterans?” Essays must be 200 words or fewer and submitted voluntarily by students.

Entries are due by Oct. 3 to the Sussex County Division of Senior Services at One Spring Street in Newton. Each submission must include the student’s name, grade, address, phone number, school, and a school contact person.

Two winners will be selected by members of the Veterans Committee, each receiving $200 and the opportunity to read their essays at the Nov. 2 ceremony. Permission to publish the winning essays is required.
