Sussex County teen dies after three-car crash in New York, police say

WARWICK, N.Y. (Orange County) — A 19-year-old from Sussex County has died following a three-car crash in Warwick, according to town police.

The accident occurred around 8:07 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at the intersection of County Route 1 and Missionland Road. Warwick police said officers, along with Pine Island EMS and the Pine Island Fire Department, responded to the scene.

According to investigators, the driver of a 2012 Suzuki sedan was trapped in the vehicle with serious injuries. Firefighters extricated the driver, identified as Zachary Matthews, 19, of Sussex, and medical personnel provided emergency treatment. He was airlifted by medevac helicopter from Pine Island Park to Westchester Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Matthews died on Oct. 3 from his injuries.

The other vehicles involved were a 2020 Ford Explorer and a 2017 Chevrolet Express. A 39-year-old woman from Pine Island, driving the Explorer, and her 22-year-old passenger were transported to Garnet Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The Chevrolet driver, a 32-year-old man from Pine Bush, was taken to St. Anthony Community Hospital in Warwick, also with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Town of Warwick Police Department and the New York State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
