Volunteers clean veterans’ headstones at Hunterdon County cemetery

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Hunterdon County Commissioner Director John E. Lanza and Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée Robeson joined more than 30 volunteers Saturday for the county’s Veterans Headstone Cleaning Program at Prospect Hill Cemetery in Flemington.

The event marked the first cleanup of the 2026 season and brought together residents of all ages to help preserve the headstones of local veterans using approved preservation techniques.

“This program is a meaningful way for our community to come together in recognition of the men and women who served our country,” said Director Lanza. “It’s especially encouraging to see so many young people stepping up to volunteer—learning firsthand the importance of service, remembrance, and giving back to their community.”

The program is organized through the county’s Division of Veterans Affairs and focuses on maintaining and preserving historic cemeteries throughout Hunterdon County.

Volunteers spent the morning carefully cleaning veterans’ headstones while learning techniques designed to protect the integrity of the markers.

Additional Veterans Headstone Cleaning Program events are scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at several cemeteries across the county, including June 6 at Rural Hill Cemetery in Whitehouse Station, Oct. 17 at Milford Union Cemetery in Milford and Nov. 7 at Union Cemetery in Ringoes.

Residents interested in volunteering may sign up by contacting the Hunterdon County Public Information Office at ecarrier@co.hunterdon.nj.us.
