Warren County animal shelter halts new intakes amid overcrowding

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Warren County) — Common Sense for Animals (CSA) has temporarily stopped taking in new dogs and cats after becoming overwhelmed with animals, the organization said Wednesday.

The Warren County Board of Health has prohibited the shelter from accepting more pets until its population decreases. CSA said it is currently housing about twice the number of animals allowed, creating strain on many of the 48 municipalities it serves across northern New Jersey.

“We serve the public and Animal Control Officers. They continue to bring animals abandoned all over North Jersey,” CSA said in a statement.

The shelter urged residents to consider adopting or fostering pets immediately to help reduce the overcrowding. “If you are considering adopting a pet, please do it now so we can again open our doors to help local strays,” the group said.

CSA, located at 2420 State Route 57 in Franklin Township, can be reached at 908-859-3060 or online at commonsenseforanimals.org.
