Washington Township police recognize Eagle Scout for headquarters improvement project

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — The Washington Township Police Department has recognized Eagle Scout Gavin Smith for completing a project that expanded equipment storage space at police headquarters.

Smith’s Eagle Scout project focused on improving an area behind police headquarters to create additional onsite storage for department equipment. The project included removing an old fence surrounding the department’s dumpster, clearing grass from a corner of the parking lot and preparing the area with gravel.

According to the police department, the project required approximately 113 hours of work and the assistance of about eight volunteers during the planning and construction phases.

The idea for the project came after Smith met with Police Chief Almer and identified an opportunity to improve the area where the department’s training trailer had previously been stored. The goal was to create additional usable space so the department could store more equipment at headquarters instead of at other locations.

The police department said Smith also has a personal connection to law enforcement. Several members of his family are police officers, and his older brother previously completed an Eagle Scout project benefiting the Washington Township Police Department. Smith said he is grateful for the men and women who protect and serve the community.

The department also recognized Smith’s family, his Scout troop and Harrington Construction Companies for supporting the project. Police said a donation of materials from Harrington Construction Companies, through Mike Roskie and Patrick Harrington, helped make the project possible.
