Weekend lane closure scheduled on I-280 eastbound over Passaic River
EAST HANOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Motorists traveling on Interstate 280 eastbound between Morris and Essex counties should expect delays this weekend as the New Jersey Department of Transportation closes the right lane on the bridge over the Passaic River for bridge replacement work.
The closure is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Friday, July 31, and continue until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 3.
The right lane on I-280 eastbound will be closed before the bridge between East Hanover in Morris County and Roseland in Essex County. One lane of traffic will remain open using the temporary median crossover.
According to NJDOT, the closure is necessary to pour the concrete bridge deck in the left lane and allow it to cure without vibrations caused by traffic.
Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays while traveling through the work zone.
By 5 a.m. Monday, the right lane is expected to reopen, restoring two lanes of eastbound traffic across the bridge.
The work is part of a $12 million federally funded project to replace the I-280 eastbound bridge deck over the Passaic River. The project also includes bridge abutment improvements, guiderail replacement, installation of wildlife fencing and scour protection improvements at the bridge piers.
Construction is being completed in stages to minimize impacts on motorists and is expected to be finished by fall 2029.
