Wildlife rescuers construct platform to save deer trapped for weeks in ravine
NEW JERSEY – A deer trapped for weeks in a narrow ravine bordered by 8-foot cement walls was safely freed this week thanks to a coordinated rescue effort involving wildlife rehabilitators and local animal control officers, according to a post Tuesday, Oct. 28, from The Last Resort Wildlife Refuge, based in West Milford.
The rescue, which took place at an undisclosed location, began Sunday, October 26, after the organization received a call about an injured deer stuck in the confined space. Animal Control Officers Adriana and Shaina from Associated Humane Societies Newark had been working tirelessly for days to find a way to help the animal but were unable to locate an escape route.
“We learned yesterday from local residents, he’s been stuck down there for weeks!!!” the post read. “The situation was looking pretty grim.”
After USDA officials assessed the situation Monday but were unable to assist, the team from The Last Resort Wildlife Refuge decided to take matters into their own hands.
“We don’t give up on animals! We couldn’t just do nothing,” the group wrote.
The rescue team, led by apprentice rehabber and carpenter Sandy Platt Mantione, built a custom stepped platform to give the deer a way to climb out of the ravine. Working quickly and quietly to avoid startling the animal, the team completed the structure and withdrew from the area to watch what would happen next.
“Within minutes of finishing the build, pulling out of the area, and watching from the other side… well… watch the video and see for yourself!!” the post said, describing the deer’s successful escape.
The organization credited teamwork between The Last Resort Wildlife Refuge, Associated Humane Societies Newark, and local residents for the rescue.
“Teamwork makes the dreamwork,” the post concluded.
