Woman charged with animal cruelty after wounded dog found in Byram Township

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A 50-year-old Byram Township woman has been charged with animal cruelty after police found her dog running along Route 206 in Byram with a severe, neglected wound, authorities said.

On Aug. 21 at 4:18 p.m., Byram Township patrol officers responded to a report of a wounded dog running at large near 48 Route 206, police said. Officers located the unleashed dog with a large wound on its back that was infested with maggots and flies.

An animal control officer was called to the scene, secured the dog and transported it to an emergency animal hospital, where staff confirmed the wound was severe and had been neglected, according to police.

The dog’s owner, Beatrix Strnad of Byram Township, was charged with third-degree animal cruelty and with having an unlicensed dog. She was released pending a Sussex County Superior Court date.
