Woman killed, several injured in three-vehicle crash on Route 23 in Sussex County

FRANKLIN BOROUGH, N.J. (Sussex County) — A woman was killed and several other people were injured in a three-vehicle crash involving a dump truck Thursday morning at the intersection of Route 23 and Mabie Street in Franklin Borough, authorities said.

The Franklin Borough Police Department responded shortly after 9:30 a.m. June 18 to reports of a multi-vehicle crash at the busy intersection.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Ford SUV occupied by an adult female driver and a juvenile front-seat passenger was struck on the driver’s side by a dump truck traveling northbound on Route 23.

Police said the initial collision forced the Ford SUV into the southbound lane, where it was struck a second time on the driver’s side by a Toyota SUV traveling southbound.

The dump truck continued northbound for a short distance before leaving the roadway, striking a utility pole and coming to rest in the rear yard of a nearby residence.

The collision caused power disruptions near the intersection and surrounding residences, resulting in traffic detours while utility crews and emergency responders worked at the scene.

The female driver of the Ford SUV and the juvenile passenger were transported by separate medical helicopters to a local trauma center for treatment. Authorities said the driver later died from her injuries. Her identity was not immediately released out of respect for her family.

The driver of the Toyota SUV suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. The dump truck driver also reported injuries and was evaluated at a medical facility.

The crash remains under investigation by the Franklin Borough Detective Bureau, the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office and the New Jersey State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit.

Franklin police were assisted at the scene by the Franklin Fire Department, Hardyston Township Police Department, Hamburg Borough Police Department, Ogdensburg Borough Police Department, St. Clare’s Ambulance Service, St. Clare’s Paramedics, Atlantic Health System and the New Jersey State Police.
