1 dead, 1 injured in crash involving dump truck on I-80 in Essex County

FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP, NJ (Essex County) – One person died and another injured following a crash involving a dump truck on Interstate 80 in Essex County early Friday morning, according to New Jersey State Police spokesperson Sergeant Jeffrey Lebron.

The crash happened at around 2:47 a.m. on I-80 eastbound at milepost 49.6 in Fairfield Township, Lebron said.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a Kenworth dump truck and a Mazda passenger vehicle, driven by Sixto Torres-Duran, 43, of Paterson, were traveling eastbound on I-80 when the Mazda lost directional control, ran off the roadway to the right, and impacted the guardrail.

Subsequently, the Mazda re-entered the roadway and collided with the Kenworth, causing the dump truck to overturn.

As a result of the crash, Torres-Duran suffered fatal injuries. The driver of the dump truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to an area hospital, Lebron said.

The accident remains under investigation and no additional information was available, Lebron said.
