1 killed, 1 seriously injured in crash on I-78 in Hunterdon County
Troopers responded to a motor vehicle crash on April 6 at 4:46 p.m. on I-78 East at milepost 7.8 in Bethlehem Township, Lebron said.
Based on a preliminary investigation, a Peterbilt semi-trailer was parked on the right shoulder when a Ford F-150, driven by Alan Smith, 78, of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, and pulling a camper, was struck by an unknown vehicle traveling eastbound on I-78. In the area of milepost 7.8, the unknown vehicle collided with the side of the Ford, causing it to veer onto the right shoulder, where it struck the Peterbilt trailer. The unknown vehicle continued traveling eastbound, Lebron said.
As a result of the crash, Smith sustained fatal injuries, and his passenger, Patricia Harvey, 78, also of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital.
No other injuries were reported, Lebron added.
The crash remains under investigation, and no further information was available.
