2 men indicted for Somerset County homicide

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ (Somerset County) – A Somerset County Grand Jury has indicted Daniel Matthews, 44, of Brooklyn, NY, and Andrew Mumby, 47, of New Brunswick in relation to the homicide of Artis Young, 46, of Franklin Township which occurred in December of 2023, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald.

Matthews and Mumby were indicted Thursday on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree felony murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy to disturb human remains, second-degree disturbing human remains, and two counts of third-degree hindering apprehension. Both remain lodged in Somerset County Jail, McDonald said.

On Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at around 6:23 p.m., police received a missing person report from a family member regarding Young of Franklin Township. The family reported that he was last seen on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023, McDonald said.

Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department initiated an investigation into the whereabouts of Young and determined that Young had plans to meet with Matthews in Franklin Township on Dec. 29, 2023, McDonald said.

During the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, an unidentified male was found dead in Brooklyn. Subsequently, New York authorities identified the male as Young, McDonald said.

An autopsy was conducted by the New York State Regional Medical Examiner’s Office which ruled the manner of Artis Young’s death as homicide, McDonald siad.

The Franklin Township Police Department detectives who began the investigation as a missing persons case now initiated a homicide investigation along with detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigation Unit, McDonald said.

As a result of this investigation, Mumby and Matthews were identified as suspects in the death of Young, McDonald said.

Mumby was arrested on Wednesday, Feb. 7 in New Brunswick and Matthews was arrested on March 12 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Both were charged with first-degree murder, second-degree disturbing or desecrating human remains, second-degree conspiracy to disturb or desecrate human remains, third-degree hindering prosecution and third-degree hindering the prosecution of another, McDonald said.
