St. Luke’s President and CEO Richard A. Anderson marks 40 years of leadership
Tuesday, June 3, marked a significant milestone for St. Luke’s University Health Network and its longtime leader, Richard A. Anderson, who celebrated his 40th anniversary as head of the organization.
Anderson, the longest-tenured health care executive in the United States, has served as President and CEO of St. Luke’s since 1985. Over four decades, he has overseen the transformation of the network from a single hospital into one of the largest health systems in Pennsylvania and western New Jersey.
In 1985, St. Luke’s was a standalone hospital in Bethlehem with a $63 million operating budget. Today, the network’s annual revenue exceeds $4 billion. SLUHN now employs more than 21,000 people, operates 15 hospital campuses, and offers care at more than 350 outpatient locations across 11 counties. Its services include the largest trauma network in Pennsylvania.
Under Anderson’s leadership, St. Luke’s partnered with Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine to establish the region’s only medical school campus. The network also continues to operate the nation’s oldest school of nursing, founded in 1884. Today, more than 2,700 students study over 100 medical disciplines within the network, positioning St. Luke’s as the Lehigh Valley’s leader in medical education.
During Anderson’s tenure, St. Luke’s has earned hundreds of national awards and recognitions for quality and patient safety. These include Leapfrog Safety Grade A ratings at 11 hospitals, five-star ratings from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services at 10 facilities, and recognition as one of Premier’s 100 Top Hospitals for 11 consecutive years. In 2021, St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem was named the No. 1 Teaching Hospital in the United States.
In 2024, Anderson received the Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Healthcare CEO from The Leapfrog Group, a top national patient safety advocacy organization. The award honors CEOs who show courageous and ethical leadership in advancing affordable, high-quality care.
“He has dedicated his career to putting patients first and truly leads by example,” said Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “As a result, St. Luke’s is a beacon of excellence showing the lifesaving power of great leadership.”
In recognition of his leadership, the St. Luke’s Board of Trustees named its Bethlehem Township hospital the Richard A. Anderson Campus in 2010.
Anderson earned a Master of Public Health in Healthcare Administration from the University of Pittsburgh and holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois, where he was a three-year varsity letter winner in swimming and received the George Huff Award for excellence in athletics and scholarship.
