Man charged after police pursuit in Morris County injures 3, including officer

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — A Hopatcong man is facing multiple charges after allegedly fleeing police and causing a crash that injured three people, including a police officer, according to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office.

Tyler A. Burwell, 20, was charged with one count of eluding, two counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of assault by auto following the Tuesday night incident.

According to Meghan Knab, Public Information Officer for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the pursuit began around 10:45 p.m. on July 8 when officers from the Mount Arlington and Mount Olive police departments attempted to stop a speeding 2019 Audi A4. The vehicle failed to stop and continued to flee, ultimately striking a 2014 Ford Flex at the intersection of Route 46 and Mount Olive Road. The impact also caused a collision with a Mount Arlington Police patrol vehicle.

The driver and passenger of the Ford Flex were transported to a nearby hospital and are reportedly in stable condition. The Mount Arlington officer was also taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Burwell was taken into custody at the scene and has been transferred to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending future court proceedings.
