Man arrested after multi-town police chase in stolen minivan, police say

CHESTER, N.J. (Morris County) — A man wanted on a parole violation for armed robbery was arrested Thursday after leading police on a pursuit through several Morris County towns in a stolen vehicle, authorities said.

The incident began around 2:20 p.m. when a resident on Ryan Court reported a suspicious man standing outside a silver minivan in their driveway, according to Chester police. Officers determined the vehicle had been reported stolen and was involved in a pursuit earlier in Roxbury Township.

As officers arrived, the man got back into the minivan, drove across a lawn and sped toward Old Chester Road, police said. At the intersection of Old Chester Road and Ryan Court, he struck a concrete curb, damaging the vehicle’s tire, before fleeing north onto Route 206.

At the intersection of Route 206 and Route 24 in Chester Borough, the minivan struck multiple stopped vehicles before continuing north. Officers pursued the driver into the Flanders section of Mount Olive Township, where the vehicle became disabled near the Overlook at Flanders apartment complex.

The suspect fled on foot into nearby woods but was quickly apprehended by Chester, Mount Olive and Roxbury officers. He was transported to Hackettstown Medical Center for evaluation and is expected to be taken to the Morris County Jail upon release, police said.

The individual’s name was not released Thursday.

The driver faces charges of eluding, receiving stolen property, and criminal mischief, along with several motor vehicle violations.

No civilians, motorists or officers were injured. Chester police thanked Mount Olive police, Roxbury police, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, Morris County Communications Center and the New Jersey State Police for their assistance. They also credited the resident who first reported the suspicious activity.
