Morris County–based company Mondelēz recalls RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches in eight states, including New Jersey

EAST HANOVER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Mondelēz Global LLC, the Morris County–based snack manufacturer, has issued a voluntary recall of 70 cases of RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches distributed in eight states, including New Jersey, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall affects products shipped to New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Alabama. The FDA said the action involves one SKU and two code dates previously recalled in July. Officials noted that this is not an expansion of the earlier recall and is being conducted out of an abundance of caution.

The affected cartons contain individually wrapped packs that may be mislabeled as the Cheese variety, even though the product inside may be the Peanut Butter variety. The FDA warned that consumers with peanut allergies or severe sensitivities risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the mislabeled product.

Mondelēz reported that the outer cartons are correctly labeled, including allergen statements indicating the product contains peanuts.

The recall applies only to 27.6-ounce cartons of RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches (20-count) with the following identifiers:

  • Retail UPC: 44000 07584 2
  • Best When Used By Dates: 8 JAN 26 and 15 JAN 26
  • Plant Code: “AE” (printed on the top of the package)

Cartons containing only RITZ Cheese Cracker Sandwiches are not affected. Other RITZ Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwich products and RITZ variety packs with different dates or plant codes are also not included.

According to the FDA, Mondelēz has received no reports of illness or injury related to the recall. The issue was discovered after 70 cases were inadvertently shipped to a limited number of retailers. The company said it has taken corrective steps.

Consumers with peanut allergies are urged not to eat the affected product and to discard it. Questions may be directed to Mondelēz at 1-844-366-1171, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

The FDA said the recall is being conducted with its full knowledge and oversight.
