Mount Olive joins community energy program aimed at lowering electric bills

MOUNT OLIVE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Mount Olive Township has announced its participation in a state-approved community energy aggregation program designed to help residents save money on their electricity bills.

Township officials said Mount Olive has joined the Garden State Community Energy Cooperative, which allows municipalities to pool residents’ energy demand and secure competitive electricity supply rates through a public auction process.

Following a recent auction conducted by the cooperative, Direct Energy Services LLC was selected as the new energy supplier for Mount Olive’s residential energy aggregation program. Officials said eligible residents could see an estimated 7% savings on the supply portion of their monthly electric bills compared with the current Basic Generation Service rate offered by Jersey Central Power & Light.

Under the program, eligible residents are automatically enrolled, though participation is voluntary. Residents may opt out if they choose not to take part.

Direct mail notifications were sent Dec. 26 to all eligible households, including those without net metering for solar, time-of-day meters, or third-party electricity contracts, and those who had not previously opted out. The mailings include program details, frequently asked questions and instructions for opting out.

Public information sessions will be held both virtually and in person. Zoom sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 13, from noon to 1 p.m., and Thursday, Jan. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m., with meeting links available at njaggregation.us/GSCEC. An in-person meeting will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. in the council chambers at the Mount Olive Municipal Building, 204 Flanders-Drakestown Road.

Officials said the new energy supply rates are expected to take effect after the March 2026 meter readings, with residents seeing the changes reflected on their April 2026 electric bills.
