Jefferson Township residents to see lower electricity rates through community energy program

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Morris County) — Jefferson Township officials announced that residents will again see lower electricity supply rates through participation in a state-approved community energy aggregation program, according to a statement released by the township.

The township said it is once again participating in the Garden State Community Energy Cooperative, a program designed to reduce electricity costs for local households. Following an energy auction conducted Oct. 3, 2025, Direct Energy Services LLC was selected as the new energy supplier for the township’s residential aggregation program.

Eligible residents are expected to receive an estimated 7% savings on the supply portion of their monthly electric bills compared with the Basic Generation Service rate offered by Jersey Central Power & Light at the time of the auction, officials said.

Participation in the program is voluntary, but under a township ordinance enacted in 2020, eligible residents are automatically enrolled to ensure they receive the lower rate. Residents retain the right to opt out at any time. Direct mail notifications were sent Dec. 26, 2025, to eligible households, including residents who do not have solar net meters or time-of-day meters and those not currently under contract with a third-party energy supplier.

The mailed information packets include full program details and instructions on how to opt out.

Officials said residents are invited to attend informational sessions to learn more about the program and ask questions. An in-person meeting is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 12, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Jefferson Township Building on Weldon Road in Lake Hopatcong. Virtual sessions will be held Tuesday, Jan. 13, from noon to 1 p.m., and Thursday, Jan. 15, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., both via Zoom. Access information is available on the GSCEC program website.

The new energy supply rates are scheduled to take effect with March 2026 meter readings, with residents expected to see the savings reflected on their April 2026 electric bills.

“I am pleased that we were once again able to participate in this program, last was in 2021. While not a huge savings, with the high cost of energy these day, every little helps and residents have to do nothing to participate,” Mayor Wilsusen stated.
