TSA reports high REAL ID compliance after rollout of ConfirmID system
The Transportation Security Administration said its new TSA ConfirmID system has led to high compliance with federal REAL ID requirements at airport security checkpoints, according to early data released this week.
TSA said 95% to 99% of travelers are now presenting REAL ID–compliant licenses or other acceptable forms of identification, an increase since the agency announced TSA ConfirmID in December 2025.
The new system allows travelers without REAL ID–compliant identification to complete an alternative identity verification process by paying a $45 fee that covers a 10-day travel period. TSA said the system is designed to strengthen identity verification and close long-standing gaps in ID standards.
“TSA ConfirmID has been a huge success due to the ongoing collaboration with our airline, airport and industry partners and effective public outreach and communications efforts,” said Steve Lorincz, TSA’s Acting Executive Assistant Administrator for Security Operations. “We have seen negligible operational impact in the system because of the preparation of our team and work of our partners. We continue to encourage travelers who do not have REAL ID-compliant identification or acceptable IDs to take the time to make appointments at their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.”
After more than 20 years of delays and extensions, TSA has now fully implemented REAL ID enforcement, a requirement passed by Congress following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. TSA said the rollout proceeded smoothly, even amid a partial government shutdown.
TSA ConfirmID provides additional verification and security processes for travelers who do not have compliant identification, ensuring they meet federal screening requirements before boarding flights.
With spring break approaching, TSA urged travelers who may not frequently fly to check their identification before arriving at the airport to avoid delays.
TSA recommends that travelers verify they have a REAL ID or other acceptable form of identification, use TSA ConfirmID if needed before traveling, and bring their payment receipt and any government-issued ID to the checkpoint.
A full list of acceptable identification is available at TSA.gov/travel/security-screening/identification. Travelers can find more information about REAL ID at TSA.gov/real-id, text “AskTSA” to 275-872, or contact the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673.
