Hopatcong State Park’s swim area closed due to harmful algae bloom
LANDING, NJ (Morris County) – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) has confirmed the presence of advisory level Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the center of Byram Cove and at the Hopatcong State Park Beach.
The Hopatcong State Park’s swim area is closed until further notice due to a confirmed Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB), according to the park’s website.
The Historic Lake Hopatcong State Park fountain will remain off while the beach is closed due to possible aerosol conveyance of cyanotoxins, according to a post on the Lake Hopatcong Foundation’s Facebook page.
A confirmed advisory level HAB poses a moderate risk of adverse health effects. Public beaches close and primary contact recreation (swimming) should be avoided. Use caution during secondary contact recreation (boating without water contact). Do not ingest water (people, pets, livestock) or consume fish.
