Gottheimer backs House bill aimed at limiting Trump tariffs
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer said he voted in favor of bipartisan legislation passed by the House that seeks to counter tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump on Canada.
The measure, according to Gottheimer’s office, is intended to address the economic impact of the tariffs and increase congressional oversight of trade decisions.
“Hard-working Jersey families shouldn’t be blindsided by higher prices from President Trump’s reckless tariffs — they don’t need a new $1,700 tariff tax slapped on top of everything else,” said Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5). “From the beginning, I have been laser-focused on making life more affordable for Jersey families. These tariffs have jacked up prices on everyday goods and have punished our small businesses and their customers. That’s not tough on trade — it’s tough on Jersey families. Enough is enough.”
Gottheimer’s office said the legislation follows what he described as economic uncertainty tied to recent tariff actions and builds on his previous efforts to increase transparency and accountability in trade policy.
He has introduced several bills since tariffs were enacted in 2025, including the Tariff Impact Act, which would require the Congressional Budget Office to analyze the economic effects of future tariffs before they take effect, and the Reclaiming Congressional Trade Authority Act, which would require the president to submit a strategy to Congress when imposing tariffs for emergency purposes.
According to independent economic research cited by Gottheimer’s office, price increases tied to tariffs in 2025 amounted to the equivalent of roughly $1,700 in lost household income per family.
