Firefighters extinguish overnight wood pile, brush fire in Hunterdon County

DELAWARE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Delaware Township Fire Company volunteers responded just after midnight Saturday to a large wood pile and brush fire that required crews to access the scene from a nearby field, according to the fire company.

Because of the fire’s location, additional resources were requested, including a tender from Amwell Valley Fire for extra water and a brush unit from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. Firefighters operated for just over two hours before the fire was brought under control, the department said. Brush, engine, tender units and both chiefs responded.

With cold weather settling in, the fire company reminded residents who rely on wood heat to take precautions.

“Please remember to get your chimney cleaned and inspected,” the department said. It also urged proper disposal of fireplace ashes to reduce the risk of fires.

No injuries were reported.
