Newton man charged with eluding after speeding on Route 15 in Sparta

SPARTA TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A Newton man was arrested and charged with eluding after allegedly fleeing police during a traffic stop on Route 15 in Sparta Township, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 8:43 a.m. March 6, when an officer conducting traffic enforcement observed a black Ford Ranger traveling northbound at a high rate of speed near the 12-mile marker.

Police said radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling 92 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer activated emergency lights and sirens, but the driver failed to stop and continued for several miles. The pursuit was later terminated.

A short time later, the vehicle was located parked in the area of 85 Sparta Ave., authorities said.

The driver was identified as Andrew Lang, 28, of Newton. During the investigation, police said Lang admitted to intentionally failing to stop when signaled by officers.

Lang was arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing. His vehicle was impounded due to lack of insurance.

He was charged with eluding and issued multiple motor vehicle summonses, including speeding, reckless driving, careless driving, failure to obey traffic signals, failure to yield to emergency vehicles, improper lane usage, failure to possess required documents and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Lang was remanded to the Morris County Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
