Hunterdon County Commissioners honor artist Joseph Garcia for donation of Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge painting
HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ – At a recent Board meeting, the Hunterdon County Commissioners presented a proclamation to artist Joseph Garcia in recognition of his generous donation of a painting depicting the historic Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge.
Dating back to 1872, this historic bridge is located in Delaware Township and is the last remaining covered bridge in New Jersey.
“On behalf of the Board, I want to thank Mr. Garcia for his beautiful painting of the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge. This artwork wonderfully depicts one of Hunterdon County’s most beloved and historically significant landmarks. We appreciate Mr. Garcia’s generosity and recognize his exceptional artistic talent,” said Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl.
In March 2024, the County Commissioners, along with Constitutional Officers and members of the Department of Public Works and Engineering, celebrated the official reopening of the renovated covered bridge. Preservation of the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge has been a priority for the county, with ongoing repairs made throughout the years due to its historical importance.
The most recent repair work, completed by Hahr Construction, included removing and replacing the timber stringers and bridge deck, replacing the existing timber curbs and railings, and repainting the bridge.
In 1974, the covered bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1998, the Covered Bridge Historic District was established and listed on the National Register. Mr. Garcia’s watercolor painting of the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge will be prominently displayed within the county for future generations to enjoy.
