Overnight lane closures planned on I-78 westbound in Somerset County
WARREN TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Somerset County) — Overnight lane closures are scheduled Friday night on Interstate 78 westbound in Warren Township as part of an ongoing bridge replacement project, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday, May 8, the right lane on I-78 westbound near Exit 36 will be closed to allow crews to reposition construction barriers, NJDOT said.
Officials said a second lane closure will occur later in the night so crews can restripe the roadway and shift traffic onto a newly constructed section of the bridge spanning a tributary of the Dead River.
At least one lane will remain open overnight, according to NJDOT.
By 7 a.m. Saturday, May 9, all three lanes are expected to reopen, with two lanes positioned to the left of the construction zone and one lane shifted to the right.
The work is part of the $6.1 million federally funded bridge replacement project in Warren Township.
According to NJDOT, the project includes replacing the bridge superstructure and deck, upgrading guiderails and using precast deck panels to reduce construction time.
The project is expected to continue through fall 2026.
Officials also reminded motorists that the on-ramp from King George Road southbound to I-78 westbound remains closed for the duration of the project.
Drivers traveling from King George Road southbound to I-78 westbound are being detoured via Valley Road and Martinsville-Liberty Corner Road to access the highway.
The ramp from King George Road northbound to I-78 westbound remains open during construction.
NJDOT said the timing of the work could change because of weather or other factors.
