New traffic pattern begins Saturday on Hanover Avenue bridge over I-287 in Morris County

MORRIS COUNTY, N.J. — A new traffic pattern is scheduled to take effect Saturday on the Hanover Avenue bridge over Interstate 287 as a bridge replacement project advances in Hanover and Morris Township.

The New Jersey Department of Transportation said crews will work from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 13, to restripe the roadway and shift traffic on the Hanover Avenue (County Route 650) bridge over I-287.

One lane of traffic is expected to remain open in each direction for most of the work. However, temporary lane closures may be needed to move construction barriers, with alternating traffic maintained on the bridge when necessary.

By 4 p.m. Saturday, traffic on Hanover Avenue will be shifted onto the westbound side of the bridge. Eastbound traffic will be moved to the left travel lane on the westbound side, while westbound traffic will continue using the right travel lane.

The traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through summer 2027 while crews demolish and reconstruct the eastbound bridge deck.

The work is part of a $17.5 million federally funded project to replace the bridge deck on the Hanover Avenue bridge over I-287. Additional improvements include upgrades to drainage, lighting, signage and fencing, as well as replacement of sidewalks and curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2028.

Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution and expect delays while traveling through the work zone. The schedule is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
