CLINTON, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — Route 31 is scheduled to have lane closures beginning Monday morning and continuing for about two weeks as final paving begins in Clinton, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Beginning at 6 a.m. Monday, June 15, through 11:30 p.m. Friday, June 26, a single lane on Route 31 will be closed for milling and paving. NJDOT said at least one lane will remain open in each direction.
Work will take place in sections between Country Club Drive/Walnut Pond Road and Grayrock Road.
Milling and paving are scheduled to begin on Route 31 northbound in the left lane before moving to the right lane. Work will then shift to Route 31 southbound, beginning in the left lane and moving to the right lane. Shoulders and ramps will be completed last.
When ramp closures are needed, motorists should follow posted detours, officials said.
The work is part of the $24.8 million federally funded Route 31, I-78/Route 22 to Grayrock Road pavement reconstruction project, which will replace deteriorated concrete pavement with full-depth asphalt.
The project also includes realigning the intersection of Center Street eastbound and Route 31 southbound to improve sight distance, extending the acceleration lane from I-78/Route 22 westbound to Route 31 northbound, drainage improvements, guiderail replacement, lighting and overhead sign installation, and concrete deck repairs on bridges.
The project is expected to be completed by fall 2026.
Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution in the work zone. The timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
