Waterloo Canal Day to bring history, music and canal boat rides to Sussex County

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — History enthusiasts, families and outdoor adventurers are invited to step back in time during Waterloo Canal Day on Saturday, June 27, at the historic Waterloo Village site in Byram Township.

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Waterloo Village Historic Site, 525 Waterloo Road, and will feature a variety of activities highlighting the region’s rich canal-era history and heritage.

Visitors can enjoy live music by the Long Hill String Band, historic building tours, demonstrations of traditional trades and canal boat rides throughout the day.

Historic attractions open during the event will include the Canal Museum, boat exhibit and gristmill. Demonstrations by blacksmiths, tinsmiths and wool spinners will offer a glimpse into the skills and craftsmanship that helped sustain communities during the 19th century.

Guests will also have the opportunity to tour the historic church and explore Winakung, a Native Lenape woodland forest that interprets the history and culture of the Lenape people.

The annual event is sponsored by the Canal Society of New Jersey, the New Jersey State Park Service and the Byram Township Historical Society.

Admission and parking are free.
