NORTHWEST, N.J. — The National Weather Service will conduct a storm survey Wednesday to determine whether tornadoes caused damage in parts of northwest New Jersey during severe thunderstorms that moved through the area Tuesday.
The survey will focus on areas impacted by suspected tornadic damage. The weather service said the assessment is related to the severe storms that swept through northwest New Jersey on July 21.
According to the National Weather Service, a trained spotter reported a tornado at approximately 2:10 p.m. near the intersection of Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 206, about one mile west of Stanhope. The report indicated a tornado touched down, with trees and debris blocking the roadway.
A second report from a trained spotter indicated a tornado was on the ground at approximately 2:43 p.m. near Troy Hills in Parsippany. The report included video showing a tornado from a driving range, with the time estimated using radar data.
The National Weather Service said a preliminary assessment and survey results are expected to be released in a Public Information Statement by Wednesday evening.
The survey will determine whether the reported damage was caused by one or more tornadoes and, if so, provide information on their strength and path.
