Bicyclist injured in Hunterdon County crash; driver cited

READINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Hunterdon County) — A 67-year-old bicyclist from Branchburg was injured Saturday morning after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to make a turn at an intersection in Readington Township, police said.

According to the Readington Township Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 11:20 a.m. on July 12 to the intersection of County Route 620 and Thor Solberg Road for a report of a bicyclist struck by a motor vehicle.

Responding officers found the bicyclist, John P. Chambers, lying injured but alert and conscious in the middle of the intersection. A preliminary investigation revealed that Chambers was signaling a left turn onto Thor Solberg Road from eastbound County Route 620 when he was struck by a 2014 Audi Q5, driven by Neil Hendrickson, 74, of Whitehouse Station. Hendrickson was merging onto County Route 620 East from Thor Solberg Road at the time of the collision, police said.

Hendrickson was issued summonses for failure to yield the right of way and careless driving, police said. Neither he nor a passenger in the Audi was injured, police said.

Chambers was transported by the Whitehouse Rescue Squad to Morristown Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. During the investigation, County Route 620 was closed in both directions for approximately 50 minutes.
