Chimney fire prompts 2-alarm response in Byram Township; dog rescued

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, N.J. (Sussex County) — A possible chimney fire escalated into a two-alarm structure fire Tuesday afternoon in Byram Township, prompting a swift response from local fire crews, officials said.

The Byram Township Fire Department was dispatched to the scene on June 3 after reports of smoke coming from a residential structure. Upon arrival, fire crews observed heavy smoke billowing from all sides of the home and immediately upgraded the incident to a second alarm.

Firefighters entered through the front door, conducted a search of the first floor, and proceeded to the second floor and attic, where they located and quickly knocked down the bulk of the fire. Additional units arriving on scene assisted with ventilation and overhaul operations to eliminate any lingering hot spots.

No injuries were reported, and one dog was safely rescued from the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
